TRAINING: EEA Migrants and Benefits – Tuesday 22 January 9.45 – 4.15, Dorford Centre, Dorchester
This one day course is being run by the Benefits Training Co and will cover key issues for EEA migrants claiming benefits now and the likely scenarios post-Brexit. Places cost £100 but this is a significant saving on going to London to do it AND this does include post-course email support and updates for a 12 month period. Course outline:

Citizens Advice Purbeck are providing this 2 hour course to equip front line workers to support their clients in meeting their energy costs. They’ll be covering tariffs and suppliers, Warm Home Discount, help with energy debt, smart meter information, and safeguarding vulnerable clients. Digital Marketing Clinic for the Charity, Community or Voluntary Sector
GetSet East Dorset is partnering with Bournemouth and Poole CVS to offer a FREE Digital Marketing and Social Media Clinic to those responsible for communication and marketing in voluntary and community groups to talk
through the free marketing training and support on offer through the Dorset Growth Program and agree a bespoke plan of action.

Research and reports
Dorset Community Action’s Conference on 7th December 2018 looked at the impact of Local Government Reorganisation on the VCSE sector. The conference report – A conversation with the Shadow Council – is available below. Recommendations include developing a VCSE sector engagement strategy with the Dorset Communities Forum, better engagement and networking of the VCSE sector with town and parish councils, and developing training for new Councillors to develop and promote a better understanding of the VCSE sector in Dorset. Citizens Advice submission to the ‘Wefare Safety Net Inquiry’ December 2018: Identifies that a combination of factors over the last decade are likely to have contributed to many households becoming more exposed to significant financial difficulties and potential hardship including: no rise in real average earnings, an increase in more insecure types of employment, low levels of savings, and a reduction in the value of many working age benefits.
The report also notes that whilst IMD (Indices of Muliple Deprivation) data is useful the government needs to consider how to measure rural deprivation more effectively.

Dorset Community Foundation is working with Wessex Water to deliver the Wessex Water Community Fund: Funding is available of up to £1,500 for groups working in Dorset to build cohesion and bring communities together. Priority will be given to applications from groups working in areas of financial deprivation or rural isolation and/or working to raise awareness of drinking water for healthy living or water saving. Closing date: 13 February 2019.
